Quotes Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Quotes is a small, personal app. It shows a few thoughts a day, lets you save the ones you like, write your own, and keep reflections that are private to you. This page explains exactly what the app does with your information. It is written to be read, not skimmed.

App: Quotes, for iPhone · Developer: Jeffrey Hakim, Kentucky, USA · Contact: jeff@jeffreyhakim.com

The short version

  • Quotes has no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind.

  • What you save and write stays on your iPhone. If you sign in, it is stored in your own private iCloud, where I cannot read it.

  • The only information that ever reaches me is what you choose to send: a quote suggestion, and, if you turn it on, an anonymous token so I can send you an occasional note.

What stays on your device

Your saved thoughts, collections, reflections, the thoughts you write yourself, your reading streak, and your settings are stored on your iPhone. They are never sent to me.

What goes to your own iCloud

Signing in with Apple is optional. If you sign in, the same information above is copied to your private iCloud database so it can follow you to another device and be restored if you reinstall the app. This is Apple’s CloudKit private database. It belongs to your Apple ID. I have no access to it, and Apple does not share its contents with me.

Your name, if Apple shares it or you enter one, is also stored in your private iCloud so the app can greet you on any device. Apple shares your email address only if you choose to, and the app stores it only in your private iCloud.

You can delete everything in iCloud at any time from Settings → Manage Account → Delete Cloud Data. This permanently removes your profile and library from iCloud. Your local copy on the phone is not affected.

What reaches me, and only if you send it

Quote suggestions. If you use Suggest a Quote, the text you write is sent to a moderation queue that I run. If you are signed in and have a name or email on your profile, they are attached so I can credit you. Both are optional. Suggestions are kept until I have reviewed them and then either published, with credit if you provided a name, or deleted. To limit abuse, the server keeps a one-way hash of your connection details for one hour. The hash cannot be turned back into an address and is not linked to your suggestion afterward.

Notes from Jeffrey. If you turn on Notes from Jeffrey in Settings, your iPhone gives the app a push token from Apple, and the app sends that token to my server along with the app version. The token identifies your installation of the app, not you. It contains no name, email, or Apple ID. I use it for one purpose: to send you an occasional note. If you turn the setting off, the token is marked disabled and no further notes are sent. If Apple reports the token as no longer valid, it is deleted.

Nothing else is sent to me. Opening the app, reading, saving, and writing send nothing.

Location and weather

If you choose to add local weather to your greeting, the app asks for your location while you are using it. Your location is sent directly to Apple’s WeatherKit service to fetch the current conditions. It is not sent to me and is not stored. You can turn this off at any time in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Quotes. Weather data is provided by Apple Weather.

Photos

If you save a quote image, the app asks for permission to add to your photo library. It can only add the image you chose to save. It cannot read your existing photos.

Notifications

Your Daily Thought is a local notification. It is scheduled and delivered by iOS on your phone, with no server involved. Notes from Jeffrey, if you turn them on, are delivered through Apple’s push notification service to the token described above.

Where the server is and who runs it

The suggestion queue and the notes service run on Cloudflare Workers, with data stored in a Cloudflare database. Cloudflare processes this on my behalf and does not use it for its own purposes. No other third party receives any information from the app.

Children

Quotes is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Your choices

  • Use the app without signing in. Everything works on your iPhone alone.

  • Delete your iCloud data from Settings → Manage Account.

  • Turn Notes from Jeffrey off to stop notes and disable your token.

  • Turn off location in iPhone Settings to stop weather.

  • Email me at jeff@jeffreyhakim.com to ask what information I hold about you, or to have a suggestion or token deleted. I will respond within 30 days.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. I will not start collecting new kinds of information without updating this page first.
